Parent's Newsletter
Dear Parents:

We wish you a happy and safe holiday weekend and hope you find some good bar-b-que and fireworks to enjoy.  Remember we will be closed on Friday therefore tuition is due on Thursday.

Lots of new things are happening at DI.  We have recently added a new section on the new website.  Our intent is to also post these newsletters each time they are written.  Please put the website in you computers favorites!  www.discoveryislandcdc.com

While we are still looking for the “right” person to fill the fulltime position in the one year old room that was vacated by Ms. Kimberlan, we have hired a couple of new substitute teachers.  The first is Ms. Mary who has been in the Center the last couple of
weeks.  She is meshing well into the Center and we are happy to have her join the DI team.  We have another new addition to the team who will begin training in a week.  Her name is Ms. Cindy.

Late summer Discovery Island will have a tuition rate increase.  We hate to have to do this with all of us struggling with the economy right now.  We have not increased fees in 2 years even though the cost of doing business has continued to climb.  As you
know milk alone has doubled in 2 years, and we buy a lot of milk!!  Unfortunately we will not be able to continue putting off an increase.  The increase will be only 1 to 2 dollars a day, but we want to give all our families plenty of notice.

We will be starting a new program option with our Pre-K class this fall.  Our families will have the option of choosing the same full day care we currently offer or you may choose Pre-K only hours of 8:45 to 2:45 for the reduced rate of $85.00 a week.  Lunch and
afternoon snack will still be included for these children.  If you are interested in this option please see Ms. Melissa.

Next winter we will be writing for a Pre-K grant with the State of Alabama to bring funding to the Center.  This grant would not only increase what we do with the children in preparing them for elementary school, but also will help subsidize the tuition you pay.
This grant would make the amount you pay for the Pre-K program income based.  There are of course no guarantees we will be awarded this grant but we are going to make every effort to bring it to our Center.  The State of Alabama has been increasing
funding in this area for a couple of years.  Our main obstacle to overcome will be the state’s perception that everyone who lives on the island is wealthy.  (and we all know this isn’t true!)  melWe will keep you updated on this process and ask for your good
wishes and prayers to guide us in this endeavor.  If we are blessed by getting this grant our plan will be to service the children currently enrolled with at DI before accepting any new enrollees into it.

Please be sure to refer to your calendars each week for special activities being done with the children and for the days they can participate in special ways.
